Description

The Coeur d’Alene Tribe has flourished with its history of traditions that existed prior to first contact with immigrants and settlers. The treaties that were agreed upon between the Tribe and the US Governments established the original reservation boundaries which have evolved with the passage of various legislative acts. The current reservation and how the Tribe governs will be briefly presented along with first-hand experiences of growing up on the reservation. The reservation experience has also been a traumatic experience. The consequences of this trauma will be presented to include the differences in healing between a Native American traditional approach and a more conventional approach. Finally, current Coeur d’Alene Tribal efforts at impacting social determinants of health will also be explained in the workshop.
